FAQ

selenaCAT — Frequently Asked Questions

If selena has its own bilingual file format, what happens with the inline tags and or XLIFF compliance?

You can fully export your files as XLIFF and use them in other localization systems such as memoQ or Trados, etc. However, we do not encourage the use of inline tags. We have built our engines from scratch over the last two years to process file formats efficiently and avoid legacy workflows, while still being industry-compliant – thanks to our Department of Computational Linguistics Research and Development.

A Domain-Specific Language (DSL) is a small, specialized programming or instruction language created for a specific field or “domain.”
It’s not a general-purpose programming language like Python or JavaScript — it’s designed to describe and automate tasks within one professional area.

In selenaCAT’s case, the domain is translation and localization.

Yes. selenaCAT does not store, train, or reuse any of your translation data. All text processed through selenaCAT is transmitted securely using encrypted connections (TLS). When using third-party MT providers such as Amazon Translate or DeepL, your text is temporarily processed on their servers under strict privacy and non-training agreements. Their policies may change. We recommend that users avoid running MT engines on uploaded NDA-protected or highly confidential materials.

Yes. DSL-AI is selenaCAT’s internal automation engine, designed to execute translation-specific tasks (such as running quality checks, generating reports, or applying style guides) — It operates inside selenaCAT’s controlled environment and does not send your project files to external AI providers for processing. When you interact with Saint Jerome, conversational inputs (e.g., research queries or terminology lookups) are processed securely, and no user data is used for model training.

50,000 characters is approximately 8,000–9,000 words, or about 30–35 standard pages (at 250 words per page). This volume represents an average professional translation project or a mid-length technical manual.

A token is a small unit of text that represents parts of words or punctuation used by AI language models. One token roughly equals 0.75 words in English. AI usage (input and output) is measured in tokens.

100,000 tokens correspond to approximately 75,000 words or around 300 pages of text, including both input and output processed through the AI assistant.

Yes. You can purchase extra capacity via your Pay-As-You-Go wallet. Additional 50,000 MT characters cost €2, and additional 100,000 AI tokens cost €2.

No. selenaCAT does not train or store any user data. Text processed via third-party APIs (e.g., MT engines or AI models) is handled securely and not used for model training.

We recommend processing confidential or NDA-protected content locally in selenaCAT by creating a manual project and disabling MT or AI automation features. This ensures that translators retain full control over what data is sent externally. You can always use selenaCAT’s €13 license and choose when to enable DSL-AI automation or MT engines, depending on your preference and the scope of your project.
